In 1995, Matthew McDonald was born at Campbelltown Hospital under the care and management of obstetrician Dr S Ng. He is now 23 years of age. Matthew’s mother, Prudence, alleged that Matthew suffered a hypoxic event sustained during his birth causing him severe injury. She and Matthew both commenced proceedings in the Supreme Court of New South Wales against both Dr Ng and the hospital, in negligence and claimed damages. They allege that as a result of hypoxia, Matthew suffered hypoxic damage to his brain, and that Matthew’s evolving or acquired microcephaly, developmental delay, intellectual disability and cortical blindness are due to the birth-related asphyxia.
