Stay at Home Orders and Delays in Medical Treatment

31 AUG 2021

Since the “Stay at Home” Orders came into effect in late June, we have focused on daily Covid-19 case numbers and the percentage of the population that has been vaccinated to reach “the target” required for restrictions to be reduced and finally, lifted. However, Covid-19 isn’t the only health issue, with other health problems continuing to impact the population perhaps even more dramatically due to the distraction of Covid-19.

The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners has noted a significant drop in patient attendance. Research indicates that most people are worried that they may be around patients with Covid-19 when attending health appointments.

Further, the Royal College of Pathologists has also noted that, during the first week of the Greater Sydney lockdown, they saw a significant drop in pathology testing. This demonstrates that patients are clearly delaying tests. As we all know, pathology results are vital for diagnosing various illnesses.

Medical Practitioners and other health providers are urging everyone to continue to seek medical treatment. Various systems, such as telehealth, have been implemented to enable us to access medical attention without the need to attend a face-to-face appointment.

In the event that you are required to attend a face-to-face appointment, it is noted that the current “Stay at Home” Orders allow you to leave your home for medical reasons, which specifically include obtaining a Covid-19 vaccination, or investigating a medical issue.

Take a look at the photo of Mr Victor Dominello, NSW Minister for Customer Service. During a recent press conference, many commented on his droopy eye. Some thought that he was winking at the cameraman; whilst others thought that he had a stroke. However, he was actually diagnosed with Bell’s palsy. He experienced pain in his skull and one morning woke up with pins and needles on the right side of his tongue. He immediately sought medical treatment and was diagnosed with the illness.

From a Personal Injury perspective, seeking timely treatment often results in a significantly improved medical outcome. Don’t allow Covid-19 to determine whether or not you seek advice or treatment.
